Life's Little Lessons

Toronto   Training   Trip

Life's little lessons

Being in a new city and away from their regular surroundings in Vancouver, Joel & Clara began learning "Life's little lessons".  Since living and dancing in Toronto, Joel & Clara would like to share with you the little lessons they learned along the way.  Hopefully this way, you won't have to learn them first hand.

Lesson #1
Canada 3000 sucks!

Canada 3000 had a 20kg luggage limit per person that they enforce very stringently.  If ever you are moving anywhere for 4 months and want to bring your personal belongings, don't fly with Canada 3000.  You will get charged $5/kg over the weight limit!  To make things worse, they don't try and sit you together with your travelling companion.  If you want to sit together, you'll have to call ahead and pay extra!
(nb: Guess that's one reason why Canada 3000 went out of business a couple months later)

Lesson #2
All car rental places are not the same!

Although one is allowed to return car rentals at any location of the same company, not all locations share the same office hours.  If you plan on returning a car at a different location, make sure you call ahead of time to find out when it closes.  If it closes earlier than expected, you will be charged an extra day of rental.

Lesson #3
Beware of Toronto bus stations!

Unlike all other bus stations Joel & Clara have ever been to, one must pay before entering a TTC bus station in Toronto.   You cannot simply walk into the station and expect to pay once you're on the bus; you must enter through the subway system located across the street.  Be very careful, otherwise you will receive a ticket, be verbally insulted by a TCC officer and get charged $115!  After the incident, you still won't understand what you did wrong until you talk to some of the locals.

Lesson #4
Being allergic to a new city

Even if you don't have allergies in your home town, beware of the local vegetation in your new city.  What might seem like a cold that just won't go away may actually be an allergy to the local vegetation.   Go see a doctor and get some medication before you cough and sneeze yourself to death.

Lesson #5
Go sailing and save a fortune

If you're new to a city and are on a tight budget, go "sale"ing!  Garage sales are the perfect places to find all the home supplies you'll need to get started.  You can even get a new set of wheels for $15!  (a bike that is)  Remember to bargain them down, it's all part of the sailing experience.
